Charles McMahon, now professor emeritus, has been on the faculty of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering since 1964. He received his undergraduate degree in Metallurgical Engineering from Penn in 1955 and his doctorate in Physical Metallurgy from MIT in 1963, after three years as a line officer in the U.S. Navy. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and has published extensively in the field of mechanical behavior of metals and alloys and has received numerous awards for teaching and research, as indicated in his curriculum vitae. This textbook is the product of his years of teaching the introductory course in engineering materials at Penn.
